Croatia: Pula

From Rovinj we drove to Pula- another town in Istria
Pula's top attraction is its amphitheater.  It took several decades to complete and was finished in AD 80, about the same time as the one in Rome.
The Romans made these spectacles of gladiators fighting etc.  cheap and even free to distract the commoners with a steady diet of mindless entertainment to prevent discontent and rebellion.
Sound familiar!
For a small fee, we were able to entice our own gladiators to put on a show.   They ran, yelling, from opposite ends of the stadium, met in the middle- where Brig threw Seth over his shoulder and carried him off.  It was hilarious and adoring fans from around the stadium were cheering.  Of course, others were wondering what in the world was going on!  Hillarious!

Pula was a major port town for the Austrian Empire.
Temple of Augustus built in the first century A.D.
Triumphal arch from the first century B.C.- Arch of Sergius.  He fought on the side of Augustus in the civil wars that swept the empire after Caesar's assassination.
Fort Kastel

Loved this funny fence, and these funny faces!
