Just a short distance off of our path was this intriguing little town.
In 1593 the Venetians began to build the best example of a Renaissance town. Palmanova was designed using all of the latest military innovations. It is a fortress in the shape of a 9 pointed star surrounded by a moat. It was supposed to be self sustained by merchants, craftsman and farmers. Despite the pristine conditions and elegant layout, for whatever reason, no one wanted to live there. In 1622, Venice was forced to pardon criminals and offer them buildings and materials if they would settle the town. Crazy! It was fun to run around its ramparts.
Piazza Grande
Charming!
