Slovenja: Soca Front

We visited some really cool WW1 bunkers along the Soca front in Slovenja.  Several of these bunkers connected through tunnels in the mountain side.  Brigham had us bring flashlights- so we got to fully explore them.  Can not imagine living in those and fighting battles from there.
So neat to see and imagine.
We also visited a great museum that talked about the fighting in the area.  This area was known as the Isonzo front to the Italians.  Fighting happened here over a  two and a half year period and more than 300, 000 Austro-Hungarians and Italians lost their lives here.  The crazy thing is that all this fighting even occurred during the winter.  Fighting through many feet of snow and at high elevations.  This is the backside of the Swiss Alps- known as the Julian Alps.

Notice the peek hole.
